History of the Stud

Description to come soon

The GWARCHOD stud was established in May 1988 when we purchased our first Welsh cob, a dark bay mare Mabinogion Myfanwy by Mabinogion Cariadog and out of Fronarth Bessy by Cahn Dafydd.

Our interest in breeding Welsh cobs developed alarmingly quickly with the purchase of Cyfyng Myfanwy, a striking black mare from a very well known thoroughbred breeder, the late Mr Derek Gethin, Ty'n y Bryn, Tregynon, Newtown after a stud visit to their stud. Fortunately for us the mare had a colt foal at foot by Big Ivor and was carrying a foal also by him. A long lasting friendship with both the Gethin and Jones families ensued and we are still in contact over horses. Both colts, registered as Welsh Part Breds went on to excel in eventing and show jumping - Tynybryn Farms web-site.

A Welsh cob stallion Gwarchod Paddy's Boy 42661, purchased by Mr and Mrs Alan Todd, Harrison House, High Street, Byer's Green, Spennymoor, Co.Durham, as a colt foal in 1993, is doing very well in the show ring in driving classes. This black stallion is out of Cyfyng Myfanwy and sired by the late Derwen Paddington Express 24024 - doing very well at Lowther in 1999 and The Royal Welsh Show in 2000.

In February 1990 we met the Logan family of Gwarcoed Stud, Maestir, Lampeter and we purchased two Welsh cob mares 77856 Gwarcoed Iona ( 1985 ) and 79757 Gwarcoed Martita (1986), both sired by Llanarth Valiants Image 9456, a well known son of Pentre Eiddwen Comet 1796. These two mares were the foundation mares for the GWARCHOD stud and they were both grand daughters of Pentre Eiddwen Comet. I was very fortunate that The Rowlands Brothers, William Rowlands of the Gwrthafarn Stud and Hopkin Rowlands of the Aberarth Stud accompanied me on that day and we have remained good friends ever since.

Gwarcoed Iona has Pentre Eiddwen Comet breeding on both sire and dam sides, her sire Llanarth Valiants Image 9456 and her dam 31036 Caron Starlight both son and daughter respectively of Pentre Eiddwen Comet.

Another of her offspring , a black stallion with four white points, Gwarchod Cardi Du by Cippyn Red Flyer 12728 is doing very well in driving competitions and now owned by Mrs Megan Fenwick on The Isle of White.

Another son of Gwarcoed Iona by Cippyn Red Flyer, producing excellent quality welsh cobs is Gwarchod Red Flyer 37997 (1992) purchased by Ann and Haydn Edwards of the Llanfyllin Stud of Welsh Cobs,as a colt in 1992 at the sales in Builth Wells, after he had won the best colt foal class in the Ceredigion foal show in 1992. He received 33 points in the 1999 Sire Rating s as a result of 5 of his progeny doing exceptionally well in the show rings in the UK.

A daughter of Gwarcoed Iona was retained at our stud 107561 Gwarchod Welsh Lady by the well known stallion Blaengwen Brenin 35300 and she produced lovely foals.
